Description
  • Events now moved quickly. The fundamental principle of Protestantism--the free circulation of the Scriptures among the people--could no longer be resisted. The Convocation of 1536, on the motion of Cranmer, petitioned the king to order a new translation. After some hesitation he did this. At Chancellor Cromwell's recommendation, Coverdale was entrusted with the work. When the translation was completed it was sent to Paris to be printed. For seven or eight months the work proceeded, and then it was stayed by a mandate from the Inquisition. Cromwell, however, was not a man to be foiled. He ordered the printers and type to England, and in April, 1539, the "Bible of the Largest Volume" was issued from the press. On the completion of this important work a copy of the Bible was presented by Cromwell to the king, who expressed his approbation, and granted his Warrant Royal, allowing all his subjects to read it without control or hazard.
