Description
  • When offences are committed on the reservation the Indian Police Court holds a session with the Indian agent and decides (if possible) what the punishment shall be. Captain Sumkin was for many years Chief of Police (the highest office an Indian can hold in their government) and was very proud of his star. When members of his own or other tribes were brought in on liquor charges, he gave them jail sentences without hesitating, but when his chief was brought in he refused to sentence him, nor could any pressure be brought to bear on him force him to pass the sentence. Finally, on being told he would have to give up his star, he gave it over, saying that the law of the tribe came above all else and he couldn't sentence his chief.
