- The Eugene Lesbian Oral History Project collection consists of interviews of 83 people for the Eugene Lesbian Oral History Project, conducted by Professor Judith Raiskin and Curator Linda Long at the University of Oregon starting in the summer of 2018.
- Abstract
- Anne was born in Vancouver, Washington in 1953. Her childhood was chaotic, as her father was abusive. Her family moved to Eugene in the 1960s. Anne describes her impressions of Eugene. Downtown was vibrant. While attending South Eugene High School, Anne participated in Vietnam War protests and was editor of the school newspaper. In college, Anne received a B.A. (English) and a B.Mus. (Violin). She received a Ph.D in English Literature from the University of Rochester. Anne discusses working in the University of Oregon Department of English teaching Medieval Literature, Women’s Literature, Composition, and Rhetoric. She was somewhat closeted. She discusses her partner, Suzanne “Suzy” Gerhardt, who was a middle school teacher in Springfield. She discusses Suzy’s need to be closeted at work and the effect this had on their lives. She discusses living in Springfield and receiving support from neighbors during the anti-gay Ballot Measure 9. Anne discusses Suzy’s cancer illness and death. She discusses the help and comfort she received from some colleagues at the University of Oregon.
