  • Tank begins by discussing the dental clinic that she ran in Philadelphia for twenty-seven years, her first acquaintance with Oregon State, and the status of the School of Home Economics when she joined the faculty. She also describes her immigration to the U.S., her schooling at Temple University, and research that she conducted at Oregon State. From there she talks in detail about her love of mountain climbing and her membership in professional organizations. The session concludes with notes on family.
Biographical Information
  • Gertrude Tank was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1892. She attended college in Germany and majored in home economics before training to become a nurse at the Babies Hospital in Munich. In 1913 Tank moved to the United States where she studied dentistry at Temple University. In 1926 she opened a dental clinic in Philadelphia which she ran for twenty-seven years. She then accepted a faculty position in the Department of Food and Nutrition at Oregon State, where she researched the effects of trace elements on cavities. Though she retired in 1965, she continued to stay active in the OSU Nutrition Research Institute as a charter member. She passed away in 1984.
