Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) was formed in 1974 as the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center. It was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981 and took its current name in 2001, as part of a merger with the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology in Beaverton.

This artwork was awarded to the Oregon Department of Human Services Building (DHS) in 1992. In March of 2007, DHS was renamed in honor of former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts, who began her public service as a legislative advocate for children with disabilities, fighting for the educational rights of an autistic son.
