| Artist Statement | Eutectica Design has created a unique sculpture for Grayson Hall at the University of Oregon entitled "Blue Stratus". The building materials of Grayson Hall, from cement and brick to the rectilinear design, are elements of authority and strength in a wonderful example of modernistic architecture on campus. The delicate blue green color of the sculpture "Blue Stratus" brings warmth. Eutectica has created a sculpture for the entry and the main corridor that welcome users and add a soft dimension to the monochromatic surfaces of Grayson Hall. The sculpture is a direct counterpoint to the flat surfaces and complementary of the natural tones of the building. As a hint of the larger piece inside, a small element of the larger sculpture is installed to the left of the main entry door. The sculpture is a curvilinear abstract series of forms constructed of silicon bronze. Three elements are juxtapositioned at varying heights along the main wall in the corridor, for an interesting arrangement of shapes over 18 feet long. The strong organic curvilinear shapes contrast the flat planes found throughout the building. The unusual and colorful shapes are distinctive from a distance, and interesting and intriguing up close. The verdigris patina brightens the pathway and the warm colors and sculptural elements redefines the space: it becomes more alive, friendly and more personal. Lin Cook December 4, 2000 |
