| Title | Northwest Interchange |
| Artwork Description | A glass piece composed of geometrical objects in various colors. There is a pink moon-shaped object in the middle, with zigzag lines of red/pink on top, which turns into two curved lines with a red/pink ball in the middle. Below the moon shape is a blue triangle with the tip of the triangle facing downwards, and with a red, black and blue square border vertically underneath it. This is the one of several images of the same piece. Irregularities between the pieces may reflect a difference in the source material. |
| Description on Object | Northwest Interchange; 1990; 50 inches x 100 inches; Fused and enamled glass |
| Artist Statement | Regarding this process: I start by firing the ΒΌ" glass to 1450 degrees Fahrenheit - at this temperature, the glass gets soft enough to pick up the texture of whatever it's resting on, which in this case is ceramic fiber material. Also in this first fire, certain pre-fired glass rod elements and patterns are heat fused to the plate base. The colors are powdered glass (called "enamels") mixed in a liquid medium and then airbrushed onto the glass - usually with stencils adhered to the glass, but sometimes using fire-spray techniques. The enamels are then fired, bonding them to the base glass. The particular enamels used for this project are rare in the intercity and transparency of color. They are also expensive - the reds and pink are made with gold as part of the mix. Regarding the design: My theme is the interplay and interchange between opposites, such as, the old and the new, the masculine and the feminine, the active and the receptive, and the cosmic and the concrete. I am fascinated by the dynamics of opposing forces, brought into harmonious relationship. (Miller, 1990) |
