| Notes | Eastern Oregon Training Center is an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF/MR) located in Pendleton Oregon. The training center is home for up to 50 individuals with developmental disabilities. These individuals reside in 8 homes on a small campus. These homes are staffed 7 days a week, 24 hours per day. In addition to direct care staff each home has a manager and other professional staff. This includes nursing, physicians, psychologist, occupational and physical therapies, dental, psychiatric and vocational and recreational services. Residents receive active treatment and an individual support plan based on person-centered planning. (data from Oregon Blue Book, 2007) |
| Artist Statement | Whether I am trying to capture the power and surge of a thrusting fountain or whether I am trying to deal with the Scandinavian winter darkness my work is about the essence of form as these and other subjects are explored. In all my work, materials, forms, and techniques are manipulated to create immediate impact, recognition, emotional content, and visual fun. My most current theme is figures with strange thought bubbles. Before that waterless fountains occupied my intentions. And for years I have been building the strange critters of my imagination. | About the Artist | Barry Gunderson has been a Professor of Studio Art at Kenyon College, Ohio. He joined the department in 1974 after receiving his MFA from the University of Colorado-Boulder. He has taught all the sculpture courses in the Department from the intro level "Three Dimensional Design" to the more unusual courses such as "Art with a Function" and "Art with Four Legs." His work also deals with the third dimension from outdoor public commissions to smaller studio pieces. "Learning to be an artist is a very complex process. Learning to enjoy Art by trying to make it is also complex. Once it is started the process has to be practiced and explored - perhaps for a lifetime. As an Artist/Teacher I think it is important to share my studio trials and tribulations for art-making is always fun but rarely easy. It is also important to share the joys of this activity - those times when an idea in combination with carefully selected and worked materials yields a product I am proud to exhibit. It is also a joy to help students dig deeply into themselves, then to use all their energies and resourcefulness to create a work they never thought possible."
