Full TextHELD OVER, 1977, acrylic on fiberglass mesh (7' x 5') is one of a number of works in the same materials done between 1976-1981. HELD OVER was made by printing many broken layers of color onto both the front and the back of a large unstretched panel of fiberglass screen spread on the floor. The idea was to create an atmospheric color field with built-in horizontal lines and bands that contribute to a suggestion of landscape. Superimposed on the field are transparent and opaque hard-edged geometric shapes, bars and rectangles, that exist like pure ideas in clear contrast to the unpredictable. seemingly accidental textures of the color field. The painting was made on unstretched fiberglass mesh as a way of heightening the object-like quality of the painting support and contrasting that with the painted illusions of space and scale. The title, "Held Over" refers to the spatial effect of the suspended yellow bars and is also a nod to Al Held and his geometric abstractions.
