| Artist Statement | For the Food Innovation Center I have installed two public art projects; an interior installation on the west lobby wall and an outdoor piece on the north corner of the plaza. Both of these pieces contain sculptural elements that not only refer to the context of the facility but also reflect the Oregon landscape. They not only compliment each other but also respond to the architecture of the Food Innovation building. The spatial arrangement of the interior installation, "Preserved" contrasts with the grounded and contained nature of the exterior piece. Using a repeat pattern, sculptural images seem to float across the lobby wall. Glass ""amphoras"" alternate with cast bronze trees as they accentuate the diagonal movement of the lobby staircase. The cast bronze trees are filbert saplings, root ball still intact.. As young saplings, they are symbolic of growth and nurturing. The bronze trees are simply, but elegantly ""presented"" or displayed on bronze shelves, suggesting the importance of this food source. The second component of this piece are hand blown glass amphoras; capped with a glass stopper reminiscent of an eyedropper; berry in color and adorned with gold leaf They suggest a range of possibilities from something as exotic as perfume bottles, to something as common as canning jars, or as clinical as glass flasks or vials. The amphora is rooted is history, used thousands of years ago by the ancient world to store and ship foodstuffs. These amphoras are filled with dried cherries, again symbolizing the importance of Oregon's food resources. ""Preserved"" refers to the Oregon's raw materials with the suggestion of transformation and a hint of alchemy. |
